Ok, you have by now committed to the final stages of your own Personal Underwater Journey, you have already made the transition to PADI Professional and joined the elite, so now this is your chance to face your next challenge. As a PADI Assistant Instructor you will now be able to help out and display your knowledge and experience in the classroom as well as in the water, you can even teach several courses independently! This next part of your journey will be considerably shorter and most definitely more intense than anything you have completed so far, taking only 4 days from start to finish to complete. Now is your chance to independently stand out from the crowd, and show your PADI Staff Instructor how good you really are. Don't take this one lightly, at this level a genuine 90% of divers need not apply, are you one of the 10% that should?
The PADI Assistant Instructor Program is run on a full time basis over a 4 day period, and on most days involves an early start and a late finish. It will focus your attention to not only 'what' should be taught, but also 'how' to teach it. You are now beginning your own personal evolution to a fully fledged PADI Instructor. Yes this is, in simple terms, a grooming course before the next and final stage of your own Personal Underwater Journey to the pinnacle of all PADI Training. It, of course, is also a very valid and useful stand alone course, and should most certainly not be dismissed. Anyone that simply wants to give more, and who classes themselves as a generous and committed member of any training team can benefit massively by completing the PADI Assistant Instructor course.
The specific dates of your PADI Assistant Instructor course will be confirmed when you apply, however to give you an idea of the format we have included a sample schedule. This schedule is spread over a two week period, and of course also incorporates an amount of self study work and lecture preparation work.
With the PADI Assistant Instructor program you really do need to display an amazing level of both concentration and commitment. Here you are moving away from any last remaining traces of recreational diver, you are about to qualify at a level where you can conduct certain PADI authorised programs yourself independently.
Ok, so you now know what your next step is along your personal underwater journey and you also know how much is involved, so take some time and think it through. To some the PADI Assistant Instructor Program is simply more than they are capable of, but to you, we hope it is simply the next great (yet enjoyable) challenger to overcome.
To qualify for Assistant Instructor training, you'll need to be:
- PADI Divemaster rating or qualifying certification from another certification organization
- At least 18 years old
- Have 60 logged dives, including night, deep, and navigation dives
- Have been a certified diver for at least 6 month
Emergency First Response Course:
As a PADI Assistant Instructor or Dive Master you are now eligible to pursue further Instructor Level training, to qualify you to be able to independently teach several PADI courses. The main course that the majority of our PADI Assistant Instructors choose to take, if they are not going to move straight onto the PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor, is the PADI Emergency First Response (EFR) Instructor. The PADI EFR Instructor course is a single day course run at the end of every IDC, where the full instructor candidates complete this course automatically. On this course you will be taught and get to practice the fundamentals of how to teach both divers and non-divers the skills and knowledge that are contained within the Emergency First Response Course. You do need to be an Emergency First responder before attending this course. Not a first aid person from a different training agency.
Open Water Instructor Course 3-4 days
This is it! You’ve made it to the top; you are now at the pinnacle of your own Personal Underwater Journey. In a short time you have the opportunity to prove yourself to some of the world’s best diver trainers from PADI itself. At this point you have out performed over 95% of those that initially started their journey at the same time as you, right now you should be feeling incredibly proud of yourself and justifiably so!Your PADI Instructor Development Course is part one of the two stages to becoming a fully qualified PADI Instructor and you will most probably feel by far the hardest. It is designed to fully prepare you, both in knowledge and skills, to face the second stage of the PADl Instructor Examination. The examination is completely external and run by PADI head office itself.
At this level of your Personal Underwater Journey, your course must be conducted by a very specific and highly qualified instructor. The complete Instructor Development Course will be run at Dive Academy by PADI Courses Director Clive Albon. The specific timings of the elements of your course may vary and will depend very much on the progress of the group as a whole. You will of course have a considerable amount of self study preparation work, before attending the course.
This is now the true sum of everything you have learned so far, whether is has taken you 12 months or 12 years to get to this level; you are now obviously ready to complete your journey. You are ready to become the one at the top who everyone else admires, and most likely secretly aspires to one day be equal to.
Once completed you will receive, on payment of your registration fee, a PADI Instructor Development Course completion certificate, this will then allow you to proceed to the next and final level, the PADI Instructor Examination.
The examination is totally independent of Dive Academy and is organised by PADI Europe themselves. The PADI Instructor Examination is a two day event, generally held here in Gran Canaria and as we have a Private training pool, most parts will be held again at Dive Academy.
Over the two days the examiners from PADI will assess and test every aspect of your instructor training, from swimming ability and confined water skills demonstration to comfort in both lecture and open water situations. The fees for this portion of your transformation into a PADI Instructor may vary and are payable directly to PADI; we can confirm this on application.
One additional portion of this program will be of special interest is the PADI Emergency First Response Instructor Course that runs at the end of the course.
This of course is a must for any PADI Rescue Diver courses you are planning on running, but also now may open other opportunities for you, as it is now a non-diving specific program. To find out more about this additional instructor level programme, check out the Emergency First Response Instructor Course.
So that’s it, you've done all the hard work, you've almost completed your own Personal Underwater Journey, you're one of only a handful that have shown the commitment, ability and skill to get this far lets go for it!
